Here are my six favorite tips for quick and easy—but effective—lawn maintenance. At Murray and Sons, we take pride in keep our clients lawns in great shape year round.
Quick and Easy Lawn Maintenance
The first way to achieve a great lawn is to keep it well-mowed.
The first way to achieve a great lawn is to keep it well-mowed. Mowing your lawn correctly will not only make your grass look better and thicker, but it can also save you money by keeping it healthy. The best way to do this is by following the three rules of mowing:
- Mow high and often—You should always try and aim for mowing at least once every week during springtime, but if you’re in a rush or don’t have time, then every other week is fine too. If you’re not sure what height your lawn should be cut at, then check out our guide on how much grass should I cut? And if you’d like some more tips on how often you should mow your lawn, then read our article about how often should I mow my lawn?
- Mow at the right time of year—Your grass type determines when exactly in autumn/winter/spring (depending on where you live) that it’s best for cutting back growth so that it doesn’t get too long before being trimmed again next season – otherwise known as ‘seasonal timing’. This also helps reduce potential disease problems such as black spot fungal disease, which tend to grow over winter months when temperatures drop below 10°C
Fertilize and water your lawn regularly.
Fertilizing the lawn is an important part of keeping a healthy lawn. Fertilizer can be used to help grass grow, survive drought conditions and thrive through cold weather. It is important that you fertilize at least once per month throughout the year, with additional applications during spring and fall months, when lawns are growing most rapidly. The amount of fertilizer you apply will depend on how much rain your lawn receives each month, but it’s best if you follow instructions on the bag or bottle of fertilizer, as over-fertilizing can cause more harm than good!
If your yard does not receive enough water during times of drought or extended periods when no rain falls (like summer), consider watering your yard regularly so that it does not get too dried out. Watering once every other day for about 15 minutes should be sufficient for maintaining a healthy lawn during these months; however, if temperatures are very high during this time (above 90 degrees Fahrenheit) it may be necessary to increase this amount slightly. If possible avoid walking on wet ground after watering because compacted soil can affect its ability to absorb moisture later down its life cycle which leads us back around into needing more frequent watering again!
Dethatching, or raking up dead grass, keeps the growth of new grass at a maximum.
Dethatching is a process of removing thatch, or dead grass, from your lawn. Thatch isn’t an actual layer, but rather a collection of debris that can collect in the grass when you don’t mow frequently enough and pull nutrients away from the new growth. If you want to keep your lawn looking its best, dethatching will be essential to having healthy growth at all times.
When should you dethatch?
Thatch is most easily removed during spring and fall so it can be done before or after any other major maintenance work on your yard, such as seeding or aerating. Dethatching should also be done when it’s warm outside so you’ll have better access to the roots of your lawn where much of this dead material has collected over time! There are many ways one might choose what kind(s) tool(s) he/she would use for this task—whether electric-powered ones like those found here at [company name].
Weeds aren’t all bad. Violets and clover are good for bees and other pollinators.
Some weeds are great for your garden. Violets and clover, for example, are great for bees and other pollinators. They’re also easy to pull out by hand. If you don’t have any plans for that section of your yard, let it be!
If you do want to grow some flowers or vegetables in the space where the weeds are now growing, add a layer of mulch to keep weeds down and help retain moisture in the soil. You can use grass clippings or leaves from other parts of your yard as mulch material.
Always follow the directions for any lawn products you use and use them carefully.
You should always follow the directions for any lawn products you use. If you’re unsure about what to do, ask your local nursery or landscaper.
Using too much fertilizer can kill your grass and make it look yellow or dead. Under-fertilizing is also bad because it leaves your lawn vulnerable to pests and disease due to improper growth.
It is important not only to use the right amount of fertilizer, but also to apply it at the right time of year so that its nutrients are absorbed by your lawn’s roots during photoperiod (which means when its needs are greatest).
You can maintain a great lawn easily with these simple tips
- Mow your lawn regularly. If you have a gas-powered mower, make sure to sharpen the blade before using it, and keep it tuned. Use a reel mower if you prefer not to use gas or electricity for your mower.
- Fertilize your lawn regularly: Fertilize once per month during the growing season with an all-purpose fertilizer that’s recommended by your local extension service (or look online).
- Water deeply but infrequently: Apply 1/2 inch of water every week or so in order to encourage deep root growth and prevent shallow roots that are more susceptible to drought stress and insect damage. If you’re watering by hand, use a sprinkler attachment on your hose instead of just soaking the ground around each plant individually; this way there will be less runoff when watering is done (and thus less wasted water).
There you have it! Five easy tips for maintaining a great lawn. You can do this! And if you’re still struggling to find the right method, consider hiring a lawn care professional who will take care of your yard so that it looks great all year round.
